Mal Foster Still do...caught up with her a couple of years back...
Magic Moments At Twilight Time I don't mind NOW!!! ;) Ah, The Grain
Festival, a great day, definitely the only day that September it didn't
piss down with rain! Got a nice photo of you here on stage with us, having
a good old boogie there with your 'Mal Cieslak' shirt on. What are your
memories of that day and why did you ultimately drop the Cieslak moniker?
Mal Foster Using the Cieslak moniker felt a bit pretentious in the
end and I was denying myself my own identity. In the 80s and into the mid
90s I was still smarting from a difficult childhood tbh. Foster is the
name on my birth certificate and I'm proud of that....
Magic
Moments At Twilight Time Yes, I know all about the 'confused roots'
problem, of course, think we've both been through that in different
respects. Anyway, time is rolling by like nothing here and there's a
couple more things I really want to get in! So, the highlight of your
Grain Festival" performance, we simply have to cover this one, then we can
quickly go on to your books. This is that French thing we were talking
about, "Short Time Beside You", I can't imagine what your inspiration
would have been for it... ;)
Mal Foster + I always remember that September day in 1987 with
great affection... Peace, happiness, music, alcohol :)
Mal Foster 'A Short Time Beside You.' First time I've heard this in
years. Fun times!!
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Well, time is beating us here, and I
don't want to go without touching on your present day literary career. You
had your first book out in 2015, "The Asylum Soul", followed in 2017 by
"Fly Back And Purify", and "Order Of Angels" currently in the works. How
is all of that coming along?
Mal Foster All good... the latest about both books and my new
writing is available on my website at
www.malfoster.co.uk Please take a look. Both available in paperback
and Kindle formats! |
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Ah, we really could have done with
longer, so much history, so little time. And we haven't even touched on
the music of Leviathan, who became quite a popular electronic music band
on Music & Elsewhere through the early 90's. Mal, it's been a pleasure
talking to you, I wish you every success with your writing career and hope
you'll keep us posted with that. I'm going to play out with Leviathan's
"The Hypnotist", as released on the "Grain-Aid!" compilation in July 1988,
all the best!
Mal Foster It's been an absolute pleasure for me too, brought back
some great memories.... thanks for having me!!
That was all too short a time beside Mal, which resulted in us not being
able to include one of the poems he recorded with us during the At
Twilight Time Sessions. This may not be one of his finest, but we were
always kind of flattered that he wrote it for us, this is "Magic Moments
At Twilight Time", recorded September 1987...
And, as we have the space let's take the look at his books we weren't able
to squeeze into our hour. Both are available from Amazon, either in
paperback, or there are free Kindle editions;
THE ASYLUM SOUL
Lunatic asylums were an inescapable hangover
of Victorian Britain and they harnessed a certain stigma borne from an
environment of fear and shame as well as the great unknown. For many
families the asylum system helped create their darkest 'skeletons', and
for Thomas (Tommy) Compton, it was unforgiving. In 1929 he was 23 years
old when his mother had him sent to the Brookwood Lunatic Asylum in
Surrey, his only ailment - a simple speech defect. Based on Tommy's own
diary notes, The Asylum Soul is a disturbing account of an innocent young
life ripped apart by unthinkable institutional failings, false hope and
ultimate family betrayal.
FLY BACK AND PURIFY
Recovering from a serious psychological meltdown local
journalist Jack Compton gets his big break. In July 1994 an ‘unusual
incident’ occurs at Brookwood railway station in leafy Surrey and he’s
sent to investigate. What happens next is a ‘Pandora’s Box’ of implosion
that will either make or break him. An event so strange that even those
around him cannot explain or comprehend. But with Jack... is it all just a
state of mind?
