Magic Moments At Twilight Time A couple of months after that The
Charles split and we started looking for gigs away from Camberley, didn't
seem much to stick around for without them. Did it have much of an impact
on the town when it folded?
Nick 'Morgan' Lewis I think it did have an impact. The whole
Charles/MMATT/Grain thing got a lot of people together for things.
Remember, back then there were only 2 places you could go if you looked
vaguely different in Camberley and that was the Adj or the Bridgers so
anything else was good.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time The Agincourt, takes me back, wonder
if it's till there, I remember people at school talking about their
'Skinhead Moonstomp' nights circa '69, time flies. Anyway, The Grain
didn't die unmarked, when I got the beginnings of M&E going in the summer
of '88, it was remembered with the "Grain-Aid!" compilation. Shortlived at
the time due to the fallout with Sid (sadly no longer with us) & Mania of
Momento Mori, I was really pleased when she okayed my using it again as
part of The Grain feature I did for the website a couple of years back.
And one song on there was, of course, your moment of glory, "The Eddie
Irwin Song". Eddie is another one who we lost, so it escalated from
'taking the piss out of a mental patient' to 'taking the piss out of a
dead mental patient'! Oh, the guilt. Hey, we've both been there, we can
claim exemption. But he was the man who got MMATT together and I shall
always be grateful for that. What do you remember about your vocal debut
and end of your singing career the same day? ;)

Nick 'Morgan' Lewis That was a strange day. I think it started the
night before, just as an idea over a cup of tea (how very British) and you
said shall we do something in the morning. I stayed at yours and we done
it all the next day. Eddie was annoyed and said it sounded like Squeeze. I
have to point out that Eddie was a great bloke, very knowledgeable about
all things musical, if you liked a band he had an old cassette of a demo
recorded in a bedroom years before anyone knew of them. I often wish Eddie
was around still. Righty Right!
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Well, we have to finish with it,
don't we? But I have a little surprise for you. You know I've been teasing
you about being a big star on German radio these days? Absolutely true,
Carsten Olbrich (better known to undergrounders as the man behind the Ebus
Music label) has been playing your track quite a bit on his show; "'The
Eddie Irwin Song' is just a real earworm to me (meant positive)." He says.
"Sometimes I get a brand new sympathy for old songs which I haven't heard
for years. I still love Nick's (non-)singing-style!" It was even featured
on his Review Of The Year Show on Radio Escobar. So anyway, I went looking
for an example of its being broadcast that really treated it with the
reverence it deserved, this is "The Eddie Irwin Song", Nick on vocals,
being treated with the utmost respect on Radio X, Frankfurt... ;)
Magic Moments At Twilight Time And they say Germans have no sense
of humour, eh? You blushing?
Nick 'Morgan' Lewis Well, I've always liked the Germans!! They may
not be good at football but they know a good tune! And I read that "Firestarter"
was written and recorded in one day so we're in good company! Thanks a lot
people.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Nick, been an absolute joy talking
to you, here's wishing you all the very best with whatever you choose to
do with the rest of your life. And don't forget, open invitation if you
want to come up for a visit, we'd both love to see you again and our Twizz
has heard so much about 'Uncle Nick'!
Nick 'Morgan' Lewis I definitely have to travel up North at some
point, although everywhere is up North now I'm in Brighton!! Thanks a lot
for this, its been fun remembering things. Take care all of you xx
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Ladies and gentlemen, Nick 'Morgan'
Lewis, shrinking violet extraordindaire...
Thank you, goodnight!
P.S. In case you prefer the original (s)hit, minus radio gibber...
