Thayen Rich The benefit tapes you put together were cool! And we
had some on our info table at these events
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Oops, we've overlapped, do you want
to go back to the '2000 AD' question?
Magic Moments At Twilight Time And thanks!
Thayen Rich Yes, yes, Astralasia that’s right. I still have a flyer
knocking about for that one. Ahhh now Judge Dredd - the thing is...
Thayen Rich Apart from some Dredd (and Rogue Trooper) artwork I did
for a 2000AD anniversary advert I didn’t do a full Dredd strip. It was
Ro-Busters I drew and that was for a couple of annuals.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Still pretty cool though! I wish it
was a bit cooler now, really hot and sticky, reminds me of the night in
August 1995 you came over to discuss the artistic requirements (with a
nice young lady who made hats), remember it still being in the high 80's
when I ran the two of you back to Woking Station pushing midnight! And
here's the first sketch you came up with for the cover. Memories (hazy or
otherwise)?
Thayen Rich Here’s a page from Robusters.
Thayen Rich Ok on to the Album. :)
Magic Moments At Twilight Time You're doing it again, calm down!
Magic Moments At Twilight Time It's okay, you're not as bad as
Julie White Hawk, but back to the question about the first sketch you did,
4 posts back, deep breath... ;)
Thayen Rich Yeah getting overexcited I know!
Thayen Rich Nice to see the sketch again. And I do remember
listening to a tape you gave me while I drew it.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Here, you'll like this too - year
after, Sam and I were redecorating our kitchen. It seemed to go on
forever, all played out in contemporary issues of The M&E News - then Wil
Walker (Cheapo Card Company) sent in this wonderful spoof of your
sketch... |
Thayen Rich Ha ha! Yes very clever.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Got the original poster here, put
together from your draft sketches. Still quite a long way to go to the
finished product, how do you go about that process?
Magic Moments At Twilight Time THAT complicated, huh?
Thayen Rich :) Well you had given me the photos of everyone
(including cat) to include and given me basically a brief as to what was
needed and some background to the story so I start by scribbling stuff out
until it’s recognisable for you to go yay or nay...start again... I still
work like this pretty much when doing storyboards - it’s old school pencil
on paper stuff.
Thayen Rich ..then when it’s looking right in pencil just go over
in ink or paints.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Nowt wrong with old school. We were
absolutely thrilled with the final cover, it was so close to the way I
imagined it, seen here (top of next page for website edit) with the model
for the 'face of Darkness', Isabelle Gernand of Sabotage QCQC. There were
certainly more subtle little touches than came from my brief, where does
all of that extra attention to detail come from?
Thayen Rich Ah Isabelle. yes I was happy to spend some time
sketching her... I think when I really get into doing the art I want to
put in details that make it believable as a situation and sometimes I like
drawing death and destruction.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time I'm sure everyone would enjoy
sketching Isabelle! Some fantastic attention to detail on the starship
interior scene too, I particularly love the toaster, nice touch. We were
amazed how true to the photos the characters were, you can see it here
with the photo of Marc Bell in his Brain Dead Studio superimposed (also
top of next page for website edit). Is that a natural talent to you or
something that took a huge amount of training? |
