Don Campau... Don was
actually one of the main inspirations for Music & Elsewhere when he visited
our old Frimley base with Kevyn Dymond back in the autumn of 1991. That's
Kevyn's group shot on the left; Sam (remember the 'S.J. Taylor' who cheques
had to be made payable to? We've been together 37 years now!), Pete Program
(MMATT live auxiliary), Leonie Jackson (MMATT vocalist, next generation),
meself and Don. As well as running his Lonely Whistle Music tape label back
then, he was also the U.S. arm of the great KFR Distribution set up that
unleashed us west of the pond. Well, I interviewed Don for The Magic Net
back in April 2014, one of the real troopers of the underground, so it's all
there...

Agent Yggdrasil... Jaws
Of The Flying Carpet already had plenty of history before they had a first
tape release on M&E in 1993, a Canadian band whose catalogue was almost
entirely comprised of unbelievably tight improvised material. This
particular incarnation of their works is the natural descendent of their
Rotton Kidz project; a global co-operative of creatives who took on strange
monikers and made recordings in random collaborations, all under the RK
banner. It was one Zalnikor Zundorum we got to know best when his secret
identity of David Bohatyretz came to stay for a while in October 2001.
Discovering he had an interest in history, we took him down to Battle in
East Sussex for an enormous re-enactment of the 1066 Battle Of Hastings,
which the Normans won again, I suspect it was rigged. On the right there is
me and him at Battle Abbey. Quite a fascinating and spiritual person, not to
mention a keen practitioner of Falun Gong, which involved a rather laborious
series of exercises each morning. Needless to say, when I started the
website in 2013, I invited him to write a feature on the subject for it...

Valerios Calocerinos...
His Left As In Sinister label (did you pick up the reference in the show?)
was the first to release MMATT in Australia. Nice man. Although a musician
himself (seem to recall he played bass with Lemon Avenue, and Ikon for a
bit, and I'm sure he had a connection to This Gentle Flow as well), he never
had a release on M&E, which feels mean of us, so it seemed the least we
could do was publish an embarrassing old photo of him. Um... I think that's
him on the right. My memory isn't what it was, I forget why I've gone into
rooms these days. But I digress, which is most unlike me. Interesting fact
thing about the double bass improvisations we included an excerpt from on
the show; they were actually based on a visual score by New Jersey artist,
Claudia Eligur, e.g. reading artwork like music. Curious? Well, just so
happens we have the 'sheet music' on PDF, feel free to download and explore,
maybe even try your own versions with other sounds...

Lucky: "Actually, I wanted to ask about that shuddering, I mean, WHO MOVED
THE GROUND?" (left)
Lieutenant Anne Ouncer: "Spacequake, no big
deal. Did you want to get a plug in for any of your other old bands too?"
Lucky: "Well, I was just thinking that
flying in INTER (centre) - stellar space, it should be smooth as BLUE
VELVET." (right)

14. And our
special guests: The TR5's...
That's Lucky, aka our old mate
Sid Stovold, a very busy part of the old GU postcode local band scene back
in the day, and probably not just with the three bands he managed to get a
plug in for on the show! We had Who Moved The Ground and Blue Velvet on M&E
in the early days, Inter came a little later, seem to recall a vinyl single
on Yoshiko Records, I'm sure there was a CD too, long time ago, groan. Many
thanks to Sid and the band for being such great sports. Oh, but a note to
Buzz (the one who can't play and can't sing) about just pretending to be a
big fan of bees as a "joke"; don't think we're just gonna forget about it,
okay?
