VOCABULARINIST – “Hasznasznisznasz”
(M&E 569 ☼☼ 60 / CD 66:44 Seven Seater
Records, Australia)
That’s a nice ear-ripping piece of noise, and that’s just the beginning from
this bunch of Australian loony tunes. You have to work at this a bit, not
what you’d call “easily accessible”, but trust me, it is well worth making
the effort. I know what you’re thinking; “So describe it, Magic!” Easier
said than done. Okay, let’s take a few snapshots… i) mellow sax, drums,
something that sounds like a pixie drowning, voices, latter day Pink Floyd
sophistication… ii) Gong meets the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Black Flag
aggression, synth FX, “I’m never afraid of cheeseburgers”… iii) like an
avant garde goth band from Vienna… iv) American punk with Australian
accents, psyched out Gong riffing, Germanic avant gardeness… v) Syd Barrett
meets The Cardiacs… vi) a brain damaged sea shanty… vii) underground indie /
industrial, the descent into cohesive chaos. Okay already, so you get the
idea? The Vocabs are not yer run-of-the-mill band by any standards. This is
quite a strange and alluring mixture of tunes and… er… other things. Not
recommended for the feint-hearted, but then they wouldn’t be shopping at the
United World Underground, would they? Love it.
NB: running times differ as the CD had to slightly strimmed for a cassette
release, nothing really significant was removed, honest.

WHO MOVED THE GROUND? –
“Lineker”
(M&E 053 ☼ 46)
Nope, this live set
from the Spring of 1992 is hardly new either, but the Movies actually
reformed for a one-off gig last Xmas, so I thought it would be nice to
bung in a special on their stuff. Coz, ya see, the Movies’ Sid Stovold
is still hard at it, does a zine called “Pop Art” these days, plus plays
guitar with them lively indie lot, Inter. Here’s the deal...
☼ Special: the next order for this vintage
piece of punky pacey poppy mayhem will also get three Inter CD promos.
You’ll get promos of their last two singles, “National Paranoia” and
“Radio Finland”, plus a promo of the last album, “Got My 9”, et voila!

VARIOUS
ARTISTS – “Take It To The Bridge Vol.3”
(CD 68.33 ☼½ Bridge Records, Wales)
This is an ongoing Welsh
project, brought to our attention by Steve Andrews, who just happens to be
one of the included artists. Well, he’s Welsh. Quite a good collection, we
thought, a fair variety of independent styles and a reasonable standard
throughout. Ya gets; Peal (we liked them), The Scooters, Rocket Goldstar,
Mo-Ho-Bish-O-Pi, McLusky, Cusky, Honey Ryde, Project Pigeon, Blither
(impressive stuff, we thought), Lear, Lester Bangs, Majestik, Fford Allan,
Beyond The Bars
(the stars of the compilation for us, if they would like to get in touch,
we’d love to have them on M&E!), Steve Day, Steve Andrews (who?) and
Christopher Rees. A pretty decent compilation and excellent value, there’s
some good stuff coming out of Wales for sure. And Steve Andrews! ☺

SPECIAL OFFERS!
Well, all them
nice special offers we did last time went down very well, didn’t they? So
well, in fact, that we decided to get some more nice CDs and offer them at
the same daffy prices again! Do we spoil you or what? Did Mary Poppins get
her tits out? Of course we do. And do you deserve to be spoilt? Is Tony
Blair a wanker? Absolutely. It’s coz we
can,
you see. We do these nice exchange deals with other nice labels, so we can
afford to give you near as dammit trade rates as a result of that. So we do,
because we love you and want your baby. But do wrap it well, Postmen love to
play football with anything that says “Fragile – Handle With Care”.
Same deal as last
time too; for every CD you buy from this list, we will give you a
FREE CD
(our choice, but we’ll try to find something you like, honest) with it! Are
we big sweeties or what? But don’t forget, everything on this list is in
limited supply, so do state alternatives wherever possible. Either that or
we’ll spend your money on marzipan. No, of course we wouldn’t do that
really! No, honestly. Okay, well I
personally would,
but don’t worry, coz Sammi won’t let me anyway. She’d rather hold it in
credit until you tell us what to do with it. But we’ll probably put it up
our noses or something so you won’t want it back. Right, suppose you’ll want
to know what’s on offer then…
