Through his years as the man behind the Aural Innovations magazine and
radioshow, Jerry Kranitz became something of an icon to the spacerock
community, so when he described "Creavolution" as "the best damn spacerock
and roll dance party sci fi concept album I've ever heard" in his review,
you can imagine just how flattered we were. When he repeated that on
social media a few months ago while including the album on one of his Top
10's, he inspired its revival online and a remastered CD after 22 years.
He's a bit of an icon to us as well now!
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Good evening, Jerry! Well, good
afternoon there in Columbus, Ohio, what's the weather been like over
there? Absolutely scorching over here!
Jerry Kranitz Freakin' BLAZING!
Jerry Kranitz But we're dealing with it, as I'm sure you are.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Thought it might be! So how's life
treating you at the moment?
Jerry Kranitz Very good in all kinds of ways. Life is good in
general and a few fun projects.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Always nice to hear. Well, you've
really started something here! "Creavolution" had all but disappeared from
the landscape, then one listing in a social media Top 10 and... !!!
Jerry Kranitz It DESERVES to be heard by all. Seriously, it's such
a FUN album and I think that's a big part of what's kept me coming back
all these years.
Jerry Kranitz In fact, it's been exactly 20 years. I published my
review in the July 1998 issue of Aural Innovations.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Why thank you, kind sir. So, let's
get back in time a bit. We first came across you, I guess, sometime not
too long after the album's eventual release in 1996. Was Aural Innovations
your first project or had there been something before? |
Jerry Kranitz AI was my first dedicated "project". I had been
submitting reviews to the Gibraltar Prog Rock discussion list in the early
pre-graphic web 90s. But AI was the first for me.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time What inspired you to create AI?
Jerry Kranitz I was having a conversation with Paul Williams, who
was in the local Columbus band Quarkspace, about promoting space rock and,
being a spazzy project oriented type anyway, I got the idea for the zine.
Jerry Kranitz I bought a big ass printer and a huge stapler, and I
was off to the living room publisher race.
Jerry Kranitz races
Magic Moments At Twilight Time I'll spellcheck when I edit for the
website, promise (I am such a little liar - Editor)! Is there much of a
spacerock scene going on in Columbus and around?
Jerry Kranitz NO. That's why it all went global and online
networking so quickly. We've got some fantastic bands here in town, but
space rock is a global diaspora for me.
Jerry Kranitz Well, yes to the "and around" part of your question.
Globally around.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Well, then I guess we should have a
bit of spacerock to fill the void, any excuse to play something from the
album (and give me a chance to plan my next question!), this is "Lights
Turn Blue", be interested to hear your thoughts on it?
Jerry Kranitz Yeah!!!! This exemplifies everything I love about
Creavolution! Love that hyper-kinetic best, bubbling effects, and the ROCK
N ROLL!
Jerry Kranitz beat, not best... (glad you're editing !)
Magic Moments At Twilight Time (I bet - Editor)! I always wished
we'd had a real drummer though... :(
Jerry Kranitz Well.... yeah, BUT... like it or not it's part of
your "sound", and for this album the electro drums absolutely work.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time I do love this guitar solo though,
hats off to Damien Page!
Magic Moments At Twilight Time What we're listening to is from the
original CD, the new remaster is something else again, especially the
analogue remaster. What do you think to the new versions?
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Enjoyed that, it smokes.
Jerry Kranitz Totally in the spirit of the original, you've lost
nothing, but they really shine all these years later.
Jerry Kranitz So it's a treat getting to hear them updated.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time When I first listened to the
analogue remaster, "Night Fantasia" was the first track, in headphones, it
sounded like Leonie was standing just behind my shoulders. There's
certainly something about Marc Bell's processing of the old DAT's that has
added a new lease of life, yeah?
Jerry Kranitz YES, everything sounds so much better. So that's
great for newcomers to the album, and I hope there are LOTS of them!
Magic Moments At Twilight Time It would indeed be nice! Seems to be
hard work getting people to listen to anything these days though, there's
simply so much out there. I think back in the 90's the situation was a lot
more straightforward - though our means of communication was more limited
(pre internet), we actually had printed magazines that could spread that
communication far and wide. Oh, found this picture (top of next page on
website edit) online the other day, the printed paper zine, memories.
Nicked from one Christian Eric Bjaanæs Mumford, thank you very much, sir.
Jerry Kranitz There you go, all nine printed issues of Aural
Innovations. It was a blast doing them that way but extremely costly for
the number of readers. I'm proud of them but the fact is things really
took off after I took the show online.
Jerry Kranitz Christian did some fantastic artwork for AI, and
