like Keith Henderson, Scott Heller and Jeff Fitzgerald really helped keep
things going. There were lots of other writers over the years but those
guys were the dedicated long timers.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time So there were only ever nine printed
issues? I didn't realise that. No real point in asking why you took it
online. I mean, why did we all? The cost of postage just seemed to be
going up year on year, I don't think an underground like the 80's/90's
scene would be sustainable at all today.
Jerry Kranitz I should add that Christian also wrote reviews and
articles.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time He said. Once or twice! ;)
Jerry Kranitz Correct, cost and not many readers. Honestly, I had
about 100 paid subscribers. Plus the printer ink cartridges were killing
me. Online made so much more sense. Plus I could do the radio shows.
Jerry Kranitz I think the radio shows got the most attention.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Spacerock Radio, remember it well,
many thanks for all the airplay. How did that come about in the first
place?
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Memories...
Jerry Kranitz It was that internet era where I (and the rest of the
world) were discovering that we only needed to know very little to be
dangerous. Record your voice, rip tracks, stitch together, fade in/out...
voila!!
Magic Moments At Twilight Time It's certainly made it easier, sure.
So did the radioshow end with the magazine in 2016?
Jerry Kranitz Yup, and that image shows how low tech the site was.
Right up until the end in 2016 I was using HTML I had "mastered" from a
1994 HTML for dummies book.
Jerry Kranitz Yes, radio and mag ended March 2016.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time That must have been a rather tough
decision to come to?
Jerry Kranitz It was. But I really wanted to finish the book on the
1980s hometaper/cassette culture network that I'd started in 2007 and came
to the realization that the only way it was going to happen was if I
pulled the trigger on Aural Innovations.
Jerry Kranitz And I told myself that I deserved a big pat on the
back for running AI continuously for 18 years.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Yeah, and I do get that. For years,
I found myself putting my own projects on the back burner so I could do
M&E things - the needs of the many et al - figured I'd always have time
for my own projects later. Only I'm 60 now, recently spent 24 hours wired
up to an ECG monitor and am due in hospital for an MRI on Wednesday. Later
is NOW! |
Jerry Kranitz If you're 60 then you should see not too distantly in
your rearview mirror. But the decision was made easier too when I told
myself how lucky I am to have to agonize over competing passions, rather
than real hardships.
Jerry Kranitz see me that is...
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Well, let's us two old guys have a
few minutes break and listen to another track. This is one of the tracks
you picked as standout in your original review; "sounds like a heavier,
spacier Blondie with a crunching guitar sound and freaky synths". Put your
feet up, enjoy muchly, then you can tell me what two decades has done to
that perception! This is "Purple Eyed & Mystified"...
Jerry Kranitz It's still got that "sorta" Blondie feel, though of
course that's only an impression. That's what I've always loved about
writing reviews. I just let go with flinging out the impressions. But it's
also got a crunchy fuzzed doomy (FUN doomy) feel.
Jerry Kranitz And I'm sitting here bouncing around in my seat, so
it's a toe tapper.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Yeah, cool. It's actually based on
something that happened to me when I was about 7 or 8. I was quite
convinced that there was this 'goddess' looking over me, you know how real
these things can feel when you're a child. I still remember vividly how I
extended my arm from under the sheets one night to see if 'she' would
touch my hand. To this day, I still wonder sometimes if it wasn't
something real that brushed against it! Amazing power of the young mind. I
wish I still had that!
Jerry Kranitz These things stay with you, and inspire songs!
Jerry Kranitz I sense an Aural Innovations presence.... Christian
is... HERE
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Most of "Creavolution" stems from
things that 'happened' to me before I was out of my teens. I had a strange
childhood! Ha! Seriously though, it's still an album that holds quite a
lot of sad memories for me. Not because of the subject matter, rather
because of that awful legal case with the original 'manufacturer'. Within
a year of its release, the stress of it had ripped MMATT apart and M&E
wouldn't be there much longer. And I guess you and I must have lost touch
for a few years then?
Jerry Kranitz We first got in touch in 1998 when I started
publishing Aural Innovations. Then for a couple years you were sending
periodic tapes for reviews. And then yes, we did lose touch. Didn't know
about your legal case. What a nightmare, AND for an underground band no
less.... Grrrrrrrrrrr.....
Jerry Kranitz Lots of us had strange childhoods ;-)
Jerry Kranitz Facebook takes a drubbing, much of it deserved, but
the fact is we reconnected here. I've been in close contact with lots of
people, many from the past on Facebook.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Quite! That makes sense if 1998 was
first contact, it was all over my then, received the final payments on the
out of court settlement circa April 1997. Anyway, let's lighten up for a
minute here, because I know something I personally find incredibly amusing
happened to you in the years we were out of touch. What on Earth must you
have thought when you got an e-mail from a certain Dave Gorman telling you
you were a Googlewhack!? Tell us the story...
