I
first met Wayne when he was hosting a Mensa meeting at his former home in
Blackwater, Hampshire, we became good friends in no time. Before we knew
it, he was videoing our debut gig, creating a lovely series of b&w white
photos of the original MMATT foursome, gifting us recording equipment and
taking my wife to Paris. But what really stings is that he had Rick
Wakeman for his Best Man instead of me! I mean, what's he got that I
haven't...
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Good afternoon! Well, good morning
your time, 9 o'clock in the morning in Seattle, one can only apologise. So
how's life treating you?
Wayne Smith Morning everyone
Magic Moments At Twilight Time There ya go. And how are you this
fine day?
Wayne Smith And what I've got is the ability to be in the right
place at the right time. That's all...
Wayne Smith I'm doing well thank you
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Oh, twist the knife, twist the
knife!!! Okay, can I just say I am so truly sorry about the screw up last
week! I mean, you were like...
Magic Moments At Twilight Time And I was like...
Wayne Smith No problem at all. Glad to be here now
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Nice man. So, back to the
beginning, I
think I was right in saying we first met through a Mensa meet you were
hosting?
Wayne Smith Yes, I'm sure that would have been it. I was the Local
Secretary for West Surrey back then, so hosted a few events
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Sam and I are still members now,
don't think we've been to a meeting for absolutely aeons though. Do you
still get involved with the organisation Stateside?
Wayne Smith Yes, I'm still a member over here, but like yourselves
I'm afraid I don't do meetings any more, I should do really, but you know
what it's like with family life etc.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Tell me about it! So older kids are
no less trouble then?
Wayne Smith Nope, far worse :-)
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Bugger. So, music. I recall the

three of us (Shona was a regular at the meetings too, of course) got on
famously back then, and you're a musician yourself (bass, I seem to
recall), but you never really struck me as the spacerock / experimental
type! How exactly did we manage to persuade you to film our debut gig?
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Memories...
Wayne Smith I'm fairly sure it would have been bribery. But
actually I was really interested in electronic music, so you had me hooked
there. I was also a big supporter of local, live music, so I was happy to
help
Editor's Note He was right about the bribery, I found this in issue
no. 3 of The Grain zine. I have no idea if any of the team ever made good
on it though... ;)
Wayne Smith (Truth be told though, I don't actually remember
filming it!)
Magic Moments At Twilight Time That'll be your age, that will! ;)
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Very pleased you did. Sadly, to
date, I've never done anything serious with that video, even though it
looks really good, all dark and mysterious. There was a kind of
experimental video we did with it and film clips, but obviously couldn't
use it commercially because of copyright. One of these days though, I
would like to go back to it. It's all been converted to AVI, so it's kind
of on the 'to do' list.
Wayne Smith Nice to have the memory from back then
Wayne Smith BTW, here's my studio now...
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Very nice.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time When you get to my age, it's all you
have left! ;) Your more serious interest, I recall, was photography. It
would have been in the August of 1987 (it's okay for me, I have notes!)
that you whisked Shona and Chris Carter's (of The Charles) good lady of
the time, Elayne Astrid, off to Paris. Don't tell me you don't remember
taking two good looking young ladies to Paris for a few days as well! (P.S.
Sorry if your wife is reading this!)
