kind of disappeared, apart from occasional random phone calls (drunk
normally) telling me how right I'd been about 'everything'? And the humble
cassette may have had its limitations, but I still miss them. Let's move
on to your opus maior then, "Winnie The Pooh Had A Chainsaw",
hopefully you'll have some thoughts on this one...
Magic Moments At Twilight Time I once had a game of Pooh Sticks
with Sam on THE Pooh Bridge. Best of 3. I won.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time It wasn't supposed to be best of 3,
but I lost the first game.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Oh, this song is pure joy in a
digital file... :)
Philip Hutchinson Yes, the last time I ever saw Peter was in the
summer of 1995. He came round to see me whilst visiting his dad and he
brought all the master tapes from the band to me to look after. I really
didn't know it then, but he had clearly already decided he was making a
complete break from his past. I have had zero contact since then. He
changed his name, moved away, and I have absolutely no idea what he does
now. But there we are. Now, Winnie The Pooh Has A Chainsaw. Along with I
Want To Vomit On You, I think most people who knew us would agree that
this is THE Christ! track. Musically it's not complex (E Maj, A Maj, D Maj
with some ascending power chords) because I wrote it, but I'm really proud
of the lyrics. I wrote it two years before, in early 1989, but Peter put a
rocket up it and added some buzz guitar and some speed.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time It's pretty much the song I remember
you guys for most. So when did the end actually come for the band, was
that it with Peter riding off into the sunset?
Philip Hutchinson With me still being ensconced in rural Hampshire
between being out on tour, and Peter living in North London, we slowly
lost contact in the pre-digital age. I did a final Christ! album, Mmm...
Liquorice, in 1992 with a couple of friends. I wrote some of the songs and
recorded a few others we had never really done anything with from previous
years, the proviso being I would have to be able to play them - often by
changing the key. I did some more demos in 1995 based on new tracks Peter
had given me, and the last recordings I ever made were a series of demos
in 1998.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time That late. Now I remember we
released a couple of tracks on one of our M&E Audiozines by a later band
you were involved with, one called "Waterfall". Amusingly, considering the
amount of flack you guys used to give the church, the title of one was
"Pro Dominus Tecum", which translates as "for the Lord is with thee"! Be
interested to hear how Winterfall came together and how come you started
doing Latin religious songs!
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Winterfall, you twat, Magic, not
bloody Waterfall!
Philip Hutchinson It could have been Winterfell, then we could sue
Game Of Thrones.
Philip Hutchinson Ah, well, you've misunderstood the sarcasm. The
band was Winterfall, by the way, and we were a folky project influenced by
Simon & Garfunkel and The Moody Blues but mostly kept a strand of
respectability by listening to a lot of Dead Can Dance and this track is
certainly heavily inspired by that. I have a lot of Early Music in my
collection and I constructed the lyrics based on translation sheets that
came with some of the CDs. I twisted everything around so it's all about
death and misery (and thanking God for it). I have no doubt the Latin has
been entirely thrown out of context and I can't help thinking of that
grammatical error scene in The Life Of Brian when I hear it. Most
instruments on this are genuine acoustic ones. There's little on there
from a keyboard (I think the bass drone and kettle drum alone). We also
called it Abby-Dabby's Revenge. The band member whose house we recorded
this in had an elderly neighbour who used to shout indecipherable nonsense
at all hours and he called her Mrs Abby-Dabby. Such maturity we all had...
Magic Moments At Twilight Time I must admit, my ability to be
sarcastic in Latin is somewhat limited, but I should have known! Let's
have a listen to the track and see if anybody else gets the joke, shall
we? ;) Ladies and gentlemen, "Pro Dominus Tecum". And if you think this is
bad, it's not the worst thing he's written about God, trust me...
Philip Hutchinson Well, THAT track is something you pretty much
DARED me to write!
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Innit though? But if you think I'm
typing the title here... !!!
Philip Hutchinson Ha ha ha. A pity. It's a track I improvised and I
am still really fond of it. An industrial barrage.
Philip Hutchinson By the way, the chant at the end of this is the
three of us in the band variously monotoning 'Moose with massive antlers',
'Dolphin-friendly tuna' and 'Buddha, Buddha, Big Fat Buddha'. True.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Yeah, sorry, I was still smirking at
the clever sarcasm of that Latin track. Well, the amount of things you've
done since those days beggars belief, but I suppose drama school was
always sending you in that direction. I first saw you act in "Billy Liar"
many many moons ago, thought you were excellent, but you've done some
quite weighty roles too... |
Philip Hutchinson You are such a poo-bag.
Philip Hutchinson I've done serious!
Philip Hutchinson 5'11" and I was the shortest person in Peter Pan
- they were all Amazonian!
Magic Moments At Twilight Time Sorry, couldn't resist it! :) And,
of course, you've done the Ghost Tours...

Magic Moments At Twilight Time And the Jack The Ripper Tours...

Philip Hutchinson Nearly 1000 now. This publicity shot is a candid
one of me having a poo on the street. I do live in Guildford, after all.
Magic Moments At Twilight Time And written lots of books!
