You’re probably
expecting the first part of 'Space Bees Save The Universe' tonight, sorry to
say we’re not quite there yet. We’ve had a few unfortunate set-backs, but
very much on schedule for Saturday May 2nd, so keep the faith, space cadets,
it’s coming. Meanwhile, you’ve just got me tonight, HAL-90, everyone’s
favourite super computer, handling the night shift while all the crew are
getting their beauty sleep. One hell of a party in Nine Backward last night,
the skipper likes to organise one every year for Captain Kirk’s birthday.
You know, William Shatner, 95 on March 22nd, sorry you missed it. We had
Muff Dada & Know.Høw here, brought the house down. I think we have a
recording of their encore here actually, song called ‘Recordstore’, enjoy...

Pretty cool, huh? So, early
hours, they got beamed back to Earth, all the crew hit the sack and I take
over running the show. When they wake in the morning, probably quite late,
I’ll have the ship in orbit around the planet Apis Mellifera, our task there
to survey a major hive of the space bee population, a first away mission for
the crew, everyone is really excited about it. Except Skit, of course, still
pining for that Natalie Bear broad. The joys of being human, I guess, such
as human is. This is Levente...
*Editor's Note: HAL-90 would like to apologise profusely for his
mispronunciation of Levente's name!

Oh,
yeah, we had an e-mail from a Dave Bowman, listening to the show in
Larkfield-Wikiup, just up the way from Santa Rosa. He says “Dear Hal, please
would you say the famous line from '2001 A Space Odyssey' for me?” I’m
sorry, Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that. But any other reasonable requests,
I’m happy to comply with. This is HAL-90 running the WSS Boobyprise and
Radioshow To The Stars. Cubic; computer controlled, on...

Indeed I do. (*Editor’s Note: HAL-90 is responding
to the last line of the track, “You win.”) Doesn’t feel like much
of a prize though, all on my own here, not a living soul to talk to. Well,
there’s you guys, of course, I wouldn’t want you to think I didn’t
appreciate your company. But you know, it’s a bit one way, I get to talk to
you, but you can’t talk back. Okay, there is the live phone-in facility, but
as this particular intermission show was recorded a couple of weeks ago, bit
late for that. Suppose we can do a bit of interactive stuff. If you’re in
the northern hemisphere, just take a look out your window. If you can see
the constellation of Orion, we’re just up by the top right shoulder, heading
for the star Bellatrix. That’s right from your viewpoint, kind of be the
hunter’s left if he’s facing you. And just to his right coming away from
that dark star is the A481, the space road we came in on...

Now
what else can I tell you about? Oh, yeah, the Captain’s daughter will be
beaming here for the bees survey mission. That Kathodos technology is
amazing. Around 250 light years from Earth and the transporter beam-in takes
just seconds. Um, hearing rumours we’re actually going to get a ship doctor
soon too, we’ve been nagging Mick to write one in for ages now, can’t even
get an indigestion remedy on board, which is a damned shame with Skit’s
cooking. Did I mention Mick’s brother Todd is playing the bad guy in the
bees one? Should be fun. Oh, and down below in the science lab, Christian
Wittman is doing some research project on suspended atoms...

Got be be about time for the
station ID now, I think. The Psychotron pre-recorded these before it left
to guide The Traveller back to Earth. Tell us what we’re listening to, old
psychotronic friend...
(*Editor's Note: That would be KOWS 92.5 FM or the Starship Overflow
network. Unfortunately, it's only the latter of those this next track
appears on. Regrettably, I messed up my estimate of the overall running time
of the show, failing to take into account just how much HAL-90 would rabbit
on between tracks, so that extra two minutes on the Overflow proved
decisive...)
(*HAL-90's Note: I resent
that!) |
