The Visit - October 1991: Sam, Pete Program,
Leonie, myself and Don
Photographed by Kevyn, probably with Tilly

Excerpt from Don's No Pigeonholes radioshow
(1:05)
As luck would have it, I had
that little snippet on a dusty old cassette. I was sure the jam we had the
following morning was on there too, but I'm damned if I can find it. I
think it was later in the evening after 'several drinks', we were trying
to play Spirit for Kevyn and Don and neither of us could remember
the words! Nice to have that little recording of his voice (pointing out
the irony that I was taking the piss out of Leonie for not remembering the
lyrics when I didn't know them myself) as a souvenir of the visit, his not
making it in front of the camera. Photos really weren't such a thing back
then, no smart phones, no digital cameras, film came on pricey rolls so
you didn't overdo it. Thank fuck for tape recorders! |

Right, I've just munched a Topic choccy
bar and feel ready to carry on now... all the way to sunny California,
land of those very nice ladies on "Baywatch" and land of GUARANTEED
CLEVELAND RECORDS. That's run by our buddy, Kevyn Dymond (his mum couldn't
spell Kevin, obviously). We had the pleasure of Kevyn's company in the
latter part of 1991, along with his fellow Californian home taper, Don
"Ronnie Corbett" Campau, and it was sure great to have them both here, and
Kevyn said it was one of their fave stops on the trip, which was real
nice, but I bet he said that to everybody (except Gypsy!) anyway. Kevyn is
involved in a lot of different musical projects and we have a couple of
his creations in our distribution catalogue, so make a point of checking
them out. As I mentioned earlier, GCR have also recently put out a very
good compilation with us on, nice people. Be kind to spacemen. Kevyn also
put together the most brilliant zine I've perused for ages, ANEMIC
BILLFOLD. My eyes lit up the day it arrived, someone had thrown a Molotov
cocktail in my face. Oh, such wondrous tales of European travels, how I
envied them. The journey really came to life on the zine's high quality
pages, when I was reading the bit about their visit to my home, I almost
felt as if I was in the room with them! Wow, huh? That large bit
(*previous page in this publication) is the article about their time
in Mmattland, written with Kevyn's delightful humour, fun, yeah? The zine
is so well produced too, like on that high quality fawn coloured paper
that looks as if it's got pubic hairs stuck all over it. Wild. And
there's lots of colour photos in it too,
memories
of happy days. The one just above (*top left in this publication) has the
whole MMATT team together with Don Campau, Kevyn couldn't be in it coz he
took the picture, but he was there, honest.
(I know, we saw him)
I don't have a copy of the issue of Anemic
Billfold with Kevyn's article about the trip in any more, but I did get
sent a copy of this one a few years back because it had an interview with
me in. Click on the image, PDF - 88.4MB (32 pages) |
Love his observations on Pete Program
too, Pete had popped in coz the Train Spotters Guild had given him the
night off, probably made a nice change to sitting on a bridge at Clapham
Junction. Kevyn's letters to us since have been filled with praise for
Leonie's vocals and Sammi's looks, though he hasn't mentioned my awesome
presence again, what a pisser. He even wished a sexual encounter with
Ernest Borgnine on me, but that's another story, probably coz I told him
he couldn't have Sammi coz she's mine, so there! Right, that was all done
last night and I was very tired but I've slept now and it's the following
morning so off we go again... actually, there were two more reasons for
the Borgnine curse (nothing personal, Ernest, thought you were great in
"Marty"); 1 - I called his mum dyslexic and 2 - I hadn't asked him to
marry me, all of which has little to do with music. Then he started taking
the piss out of my World War I typewriter, I mean, what can ya say? More
like battle spoils from Agincourt. Okay, so it's old, but it works.
Sometimes. So I'm going to take my revenge now and blow his chances with
Robin O'Brien, a very talented femme singer who Kevyn wants to marry lots
(though he'd settle for once)... he's after your body, Robin! With that
out of the way, I can tell ya Kevyn's music is intelligent and wonderful
stuff, that describes Kevyn quite well too. Say hi from us!

My revenge worked, Robin O'Brien
