Elling Lien of Newfoundland - the man behind the RPM Challenge!

Has that REALLY been a year already? They think it's all over... it is now. It was in February 2021 that we first found out about this somewhat noble labour of love, and after about a week of it bouncing around the inside of our heads, we thought it might just be fun to do something for it.

Record something in the month of February, just because you can.

Then, at the end of the month, they would have an enormous listening party online. The glint in Skit's eye said it all; let's do something really evil and unlistenable, album length, just for a laugh. So we did. RFA was the track concerned (it stands for Really Fucking Annoying), made with a discordant blend of high pitched pure sine waves, guaranteed to get inside your head and pummel your auditory senses from the inside. 35 minutes of it (their specified minimum length to qualify as an album). So the RPM Challenge produced the RFA Challenge - could YOU survive the full 35 minutes in headphones? Not many did, we can tell you! And that was it as far as we were concerned, just a bit of fun. However, then came...

REM: Record EVERY month, for a year!

Ooh, we didn't know about that, that would be a lot of work, and we record quite a lot of stuff every month anyway, and what would we do with the material at the end of it. And what would we do for material, for that matter? No, absolutely no chance we were going to carry on with it. But it wouldn't hurt to ask what the length limits were, would it? No length limits. Yes, we're weak, I know...

"No 35 minute ear-bleeders for this one though, promise!" Said I.

"Mick Magic," said he, "don't make promises you can't keep!"

So there we were, eleven months on, eleven 35 minute ear-bleeders under our belt, facing our 12th and final contribution (no, seriously, we really are stopping here), and the end of an era. It called for a party. We, of course, didn't attend said party. In fact, we knew absolutely nothing about it at all. We weren't there, I promise you faithfully, Covid regulations, social distancing and all that, you understand. Not us, oh no. And when we did turn up, we didn't actually realise it was a party. As far as we were concerned, it was most definitely a work event. The 'BYOB' on the invitation was, we sincerely believed, 'bring your own ballpoint'. Yes, we did find it unusual that a work event  included so much dancing, alcohol consumption and hanky-panky in the stationery cupboard, but we did not break any rules, we can assure you. There is absolutely no truth in rumours that Lancashire Constabulary are investigating us. And, in any event, when they finish the investigation, we are confident we can worm our way out of it somehow. We cannot, of course, comment at this point in time as our neighbour, Mrs. Gray, has not yet published her full 'behind the net curtain' report, though we are certain it will conclude that we organised this event (and any others that didn't take place) without our own knowledge. If she wants to keep said curtains.

Yes, what you have here is a mash up with extracts from all 11 pieces we've recorded so far, adding a kicking dance beat to sine waves, pneumatic drills, mitre saws, electric drills, impact guns, vacuum cleaners, angle grinders, extractor fans, hedge trimmers, harsh white noise and Solpadeine (*other painkillers are available, and quite necessary after 350 minutes of it), plus the little 'message' Elling recorded specially for our Communitas album. Nice man. Many thanks to Elling and the team for putting up with us this last twelve months, we've very much enjoyed the experience, even though it's been quite a punishing schedule at times. That's us done, but the RPM Challenge continues and goes from strength to strength, so if you'd like to get involved, follow the link at the end.

What about the seven hours of material we've recorded for them (has anybody done more than that, curious)? It's all going on to a serious mega-album release on the Brazilian net-label, The Church Of Noisy Goat. The album will be called Ratione Personae Mentalis (see what we did there?), a permanent memento of our participation, and should be available some time in March!
