And finally, to the last couple of headings, starting with 'Bands', coz
it's listed before the other one and I don't want to upset the natural
order or anything. What Maaike did was provide a complete A-Z of
everything we had available at the time, circa early 2001, linked via 24
letters of the alphabet (surprisingly, we never did release anything by a
band beginning with Q or Y), and the 'various' tag for compilations.
There's already a complete A-Z of all 599 original M&E releases on this
website, which you can find
HERE,
so no real point in repetition, as neatly presented as they were. However,
one thing that does make Maaike's version of special interest is that it
included Distro Direct items as well, no complete list of which appears on
this site. So, as she had a link for you to be able to download the whole
thing as a text file, which was saved as part of her back-up, you can view
that
HERE,
The layout is fairly straightforward; (catalogue number), artiste, "title"
(running time / star ratings) and price. The star ratings are explained to
the left. I noted that some of Maaike's entries show an 'L'. Looking
through, I think these were albums originally given the basic '0' star
rating; "an album of some merit, definitely worth a listen." With Distro
Direct items, listings go; (format / running time), artiste, "title",
(label / star ratings), prices - UK / Europe / Zone 1 (Americas) / Zone 2
(Oceania).
Of all those listed on Maaike's 'Links' page, only three remain live 13
years on;
LORD LITTER,
ZEITGEIST DISTRO
(although Stuart Hamilton no longer runs the distro, this link takes you
to his webzine, The Rocker) and
INDYMEDIA,
which isn't something I'd personally heard of, or had any contact with,
but describes itself as "a collective of independent media organizations
and hundreds of journalists offering grassroots, non-corporate coverage.
Indymedia is a democratic media outlet for the creation of radical,
accurate, and passionate tellings of truth." Now ya know.
And finally, worth a mention that the listing for 'Music and Elsewhere
Reviews Site' linked to our other unofficial site of the time (pictured
above), as lovingly created by Rod Steele. This one only recently
vanished, but a reasonably intact version can be found on the
INTERNET ARCHIVE.
Maaike's site met its end when Hypermart discontinued their free web
hosting plans on 1st March 2004. We loved them both. |
