56. “Unitas
XXVI”
“My name is
Elling Lien... I live in... something called RPM Challenge, a creative
challenge to people to record music in the month of February... Magic
Bullet is one of many... Magic Bullet is... Magic Bullet...”
The RPM
Challenge is not a label... it does not release music as such... but it
captured our interest... something called REM Challenge too... an extension
of... creative challenge to people to record music EVERY month... for a
year... we like...
Run by Elling
Lien from his base in Newfoundland, Canada, we thought there was something
quite inspirational about this concept to encourage creativity, non genre
specific, and decided to follow it all the way down the rabbit hole. By the
time we reach the bottom, we will have a set of 13 works at 35 minutes
apiece, which we intend to release as one mega collection in tribute to this
noble project. Label or not, it is more than worthy of inclusion here. Our
thanks to Elling and all involved.

57. “George’s
Tool (7 Incher)” - Magic Bullet
And here’s
one we did earlier! This is the cut down mix of “George’s Tool (At Full
Length)”, our duet for drums and angle-grinder (thanks, George!), or ‘7
Incher’ as we like to call it. This is, of course, a reference to the glory
days of the vinyl single, but then what else could it be? We do these
shorter versions especially for the listening party broadcasts, because
basically, Skit and I have a streak of kindness running through us. You
know, like Blackpool rock. There’s also a ‘12 Incher’, which you’ll be
pleased to hear comes as a bonus track with this album. |

“Unitas XXVII”
“Yeah, there
he goes, that’s Mick Magic, Magic Bullet, yeah, Mick Magic, Magic Bullet.”
Yes, the
first bit is Kev Ellis again. We like Kev Ellis.
Sascha Stadlmeier... Attenuation Circuit...
yeah, I think we’ve already established I should write these things down at
the time, something about the hood, I think... das ist EMERGE...”
SASCHA STADLMEIER (Attenuation Circuit)
I don’t
honestly know Sascha too well as yet, we only actually got to be on his
Attenuation Circuit label via a third party in the first place. It was our
good friend Mr. Eel, you see, he solicited a track from us for a compilation
he was well... compiling... for an as yet unknown releasing label. We trust
Mr. Eel, so we gave him one. Sascha’s was the label it was released on. The
rest, as they say, is history.
59. “drench”
- EMERGE
EMERGE is
inspired by the minimalist traditions of experimentalism and non-academic
noise music, focusing on generating sound structures intended to make
atmospheres emerge that are open to each listener’s own interpretation. The
choice of sound sources used is usually very limited. In most cases only
rudiments of the original sounds are recognizable due to various treatments.
EMERGE also uses and recycles raw material from a variety of
artists/musicians.

“Unitas XXVIII”
KEITH
WOODHOUSE (Radio Woking): This is Magic Bullet. Back in the day, they were
from Frimley.
THE MACHINES:
The Planet Frimley.
KEITH
WOODHOUSE: But now they are based up on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire. I
think that’s round Blackpool and that way. I may be wrong, I have been
called geographically challenged.
KEITH
WOODHOUSE: You chant the name of the person who’s putting it together.
LADY WE HAD
TO PAY LOADS OF MONEY TO MAKE HER SAY THIS: Pete Cole, he’s so hunky.
KEITH
WOODHOUSE: And then call the song “We Love The Farnborough Groove”. So this
is Magic Bullet, and “We Love The Farnborough Groove”.
THE MAGIC
BULLET: We love the Farnborough Groove, yeah.
ED LINER
(Kick Radio): There we go... that was... that’s a classic... Magic Bullet.
PETE COLE
(Farnborough Groove Music)
Pete is not
actually a muzo himself, but there was no way I was going to leave him
without a heartfelt acknowledgement on here. MMATT first appeared on one of
his compilations 29 years ago, and there was no way we were going to miss
out being included on the 30th anniversary special, however much he begged
us to. He even tried saying he didn’t like the opening line of the track and
asked us to get rid of it, presumably thinking we’d get all ‘art dahling’ on
him, stamp our feet and refuse flatly. Not us, we soon worked out what he
was up to, and in spite of the fact we’d had to pay the lady who’d read it
for us quite a lot of money (our fault for showing her his picture first,
top centre), we swallowed the out of pocket expenses, chopped the offending
line off and returned the track anew. His cunning plan had failed. We could
almost hear his sobbing from up here. And that’s how we got on the 30th
anniversary special. True story.
Many thanks
also to Keith (top right, Blackpool way is spot on, incidentally) and Ed
(top left) for the airplay, much appreciated.
