Our 16th piece for Shaun Robert's endlessly
explorative musique concrète compilation series, and once again he
succeeds in the further expansion of our comfort zone. The brief for this
collection was concrète poetry, which we'd kinda done for Vladimir
Vpdodo's Shorty Music series with 2020 Vision, so Skit and I
sat down with a bottle of that nice lemon and mint stuff you get from Aldi
(*other budget supermarkets are available) and did some serious
brainstorming. Much of this was taken up with our mutual annoyance at how
many subscription-charging streaming platforms the various Star Trek
series are now spread out across. However, as luck would have it, that
ultimately lead to the evils of capitalism, politics in general, the prime
directive vs 21st century morality and how our quest for world peace has
been, as Skit so eloquently put it, spaffed up the wall.
"Spaffed?" I queried, "What the
fuck does 'spaffed' mean?"
"Boris Johnson say it," Skit
nodded, "him master of English language, cream of intelligentsia, Prime
Minister, runs country, must be real word, yas." |
* Of
course, he's not Prime Minister any more, but he was still there (ish)
during our brainstorming session. Three weeks is a long time in politics,
innit?
So here, the Magic Bullet would
like to present what Dave Gorman (*other wickedly intelligent, insightful
and original comedians are available, but come on, they don't come much
better) describes as a found poem. It's constructed from the speeches
and news-clips of the many statesmen, tyrants and clowns that have either
dreamt of peace or helped it on its journey up the wall. We've put all the
quotes below for you, in case you'd like to sing along, except whatever it
was Krushchev said, coz our Russian isn't that good, so we just picked a bit
that sounded important. If it turns out he was hoping it was chips for tea
that night, we can only apologise and plead ignorance. Oh, yes, all the
other foreign bits panning left and right; it's symbolic of the cyclical and
reactionary nature of politics throughout history, you understand, they are
actually saying 'left' and 'right', appropriately panned, in as many
different languages as we could think of. Borders on profound, don't you
think? |
